چکیده

PURPOSE Analytical phantoms have closed form Fourier transform expressions and are used to simulate MRI acquisitions. Existing three-dimensional (3D) analytical phantoms are unable to accurately model shapes of biomedical interest. The goal of this study was to demonstrate that polyhedral analytical phantoms have closed form Fourier transform expressions and can accurately represent 3D biomedical shapes. METHODS The Fourier transform of a polyhedron was implemented and its accuracy in representing faceted and smooth surfaces was characterized. Realistic anthropomorphic polyhedral brain and torso phantoms were constructed and their use in simulated 3D and two-dimensional (2D) MRI acquisitions was described. RESULTS Using polyhedra, the Fourier transform of faceted shapes can be computed to within machine precision. Smooth surfaces can be approximated with increasing accuracy by increasing the number of facets in the polyhedron; the additional accumulated numerical imprecision of the Fourier transform of polyhedra with many faces remained small. Simulations of 3D and 2D brain and 2D torso cine acquisitions produced realistic reconstructions free of high frequency edge aliasing compared with equivalent voxelized/rasterized phantoms. CONCLUSION Analytical polyhedral phantoms are easy to construct and can accurately simulate shapes of biomedical interest. Magn Reson Med 76:663-678, 2016. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Three Dimensional Digital Polyhedral Phantom Framework with Analytical Fourier Transform and Application in Cardiac Imaging

Introduction: Physiologically relevant computer simulations involving digital phantoms are commonly used to test new MR acquisition and reconstruction strategies in cases where real experiments are unfeasible or impractical. Although these phantoms are constructed in the image domain, since MR samples Fourier space, these phantoms must also provide an accurate Continuous Fourier Transform (CFT)...

A new model for Spread Out Bragg Peak in proton therapy of uveal melanoma

In this research, in order to improve our calculations in treatment planning for proton radiotherapy of ocular melanoma, we improved our human eye phantom planning system in GEANT4 toolkit. Different analytical models have investigated the creating of Spread Out Bragg Peak (SOBP) in the tumor area. Bortfeld’s model is one of the most important analytical methods. Using convolution method, a new...

A Method for Manufacturing Oncological Phantoms for the Quantification of 18F-FDG PET and DW-MRI Studies

The aim of this work was to develop a method to manufacture oncological phantoms for quantitation purposes in 18F-FDG PET and DW-MRI studies. Radioactive and diffusion materials were prepared using a mixture of agarose and sucrose radioactive gels. T2 relaxation and diffusion properties of gels at different sucrose concentrations were evaluated. Realistic oncological lesions were created using ...

Two Dedicated Software, Voxel-based, Anthropomorphic (torso and Head) Phantoms

We have segmented CT torso+head and MRI head slices of two living human males. The manually segmented 129 x-ray CT transverse slices were used to create a computerized 3dimensional volume array modeling all major internal structures of the body. The original xray CT images were reconstructed in a 512x512 matrix with a resolution of 1 millimeter in the x,y plane. The z-axis resolution is 1 centi...

Digital anthropomorphic phantoms of non-rigid human respiratory and voluntary body motion for investigating motion correction in emission imaging.

The development of methods for correcting patient motion in emission tomography has been receiving increased attention. Often the performance of these methods is evaluated through simulations using digital anthropomorphic phantoms, such as the commonly used extended cardiac torso (XCAT) phantom, which models both respiratory and cardiac motion based on human studies. However, non-rigid body mot...
